Patina designs for a select number of estates and hospitality properties across Hawaii each year, working closely with owners who expect the same level of craft in their homes that they expect everywhere else in their lives.
Pa·ti·na (n.) An impression or appearance of something. A material or object that exhibits beauty and character with age.
Patina was entrusted with the interior redesign of the resort's guest accommodations, a project that called for the same discipline our residential clients rely on: warm, tactile materials, custom lighting, and finishes built to hold up under the scrutiny of a five star property.
It is the kind of work that only comes to a studio with a proven hand in luxury hospitality and residential design at the highest level.
Hospitality Interiors & Lighting DesignWe begin with how you actually live in the home. Your rhythms, your gatherings, what your current space is failing to give you. Louis Sullivan had it right: form follows function.
Texture, color, and material chosen to hold their value and their beauty for decades, not for a single season of magazine coverage.
Every material, light source, and sightline is chosen to create a specific feeling in the room. Calm, grounded, alive. That is the actual deliverable.

For Patina, design is an act of legacy. It is about creating interiors that are timeless yet alive, grounded in authenticity, and destined to be lived in, loved, and passed forward.
Stefanie and Martin Gastaldi have led Patina for more than sixteen years. Martin was raised in Argentina and Stefanie has family in Europe, and that combination of deep Hawaii roots and a wider frame of reference is what keeps their work from falling into island design cliche.
Stefanie began her design studies in Honolulu in 2006 and founded Patina Interior Design in Maui in 2016, after years of independent practice on Oahu and in the Pacific Northwest. She specializes in lighting design and custom homes, and her command of color and texture is what gives every Patina interior its character.
Her work is guided by a simple belief: great design is not only seen, it is felt. A quiet dialogue between form, material, and emotion. As a mother, she also brings a working knowledge of nontoxic finishes and healthy materials to every specification.
Originally from Buenos Aires, Martin has called Maui home for more than twenty five years, drawn to the island by windsurfing and the ocean. He serves as on site project manager, bringing a background in mechanical engineering and extensive experience in Hawaii residential construction and lighting design.
As a licensed journeyman electrician, he offers rare insight into the studio's luxury interior and lighting work, ensuring that everything from illumination to installation is executed exactly as specified. He is also a longtime member of Maui's outrigger canoe paddling community.
Patina works on both remodels and new construction, collaborating closely with clients, architects, and builders across every stage of a project.
Interior planning alongside your architect, FF&E selection, custom upholstery, window treatments, art procurement, and finish selections down to the hardware.
Holistic space planning and custom cabinetry sourced from local craftsmen or mainland mills, extending to wine rooms, offices, closets, and entertaining spaces.
Curated and custom pieces built to hold up to island living, sourced through local artisans and select craftsmen across the country.
Full lighting plans and detailed specification packages, developed with contractors and lighting subcontractors so the design is executed as drawn.
Our Maui store carries the same pieces and finishes you will find in our residential projects, from custom upholstery to Nathan Anthony furniture, for clients who want the Patina eye applied to their own shopping.
